Procedure: 3-Benzyoxypropan-2-ol 16 (40 g, 0.24 mol) was added to a suspension of pyridinium chlorochromate (155.2 g, 0.72 mol) in DMF (150 ml) at 25° C., stirred at 65° C. for 3 h, and then diluted with water (75 mL) (Step 14). The mixture was extracted with ether (2×50 mL) and the combined ether layers were washed with water (3×50 mL) dried (MgSO4) and the solvent removed by roto-evaporation. Distillation gave 31 g (77%) of 3-benzyloxypropan-2-one; 17 bp 104-106 (10 mm). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ2.16 (s, 3H, CH3), 4.05 (s, 1H, OH), 4.59 (s, 2H, OCH2), 7.5 (s, 5H, phenyl). The mixture was extracted with ether (2×50 mL) the combined ether layers were washed with water (3×50 mL) dried (MgSO4) the solvent removed by roto-evaporation Distillation

Procedure: 16.6 g of 1-benzyloxy-2-propanol and 10.6 g of triethylamine were dissolved in 200 ml of toluene, then cooled to 0° C. To this solution was dropwise added a solution of 34.7 g of 2-[4-(3,5-dichloro-2-pyridyloxy)phenoxy]propionyl chloride in 80 ml of toluene at 0° to 5° C. with stirring. After the dropwise addition, the mixture was gradually heated and, at 40° to 50° C., it was stirred for one hour to complete the reaction. After cooling to room temperature, it was washed successively with 1% strength by weight sodium hydroxide aqueous solution and water, followed by drying. Upon distilling off toluene under reduced pressure, there were obtained 43.3 g of pale yellow, viscous, oily 1-methyl-2-benzyloxyethyl 2-[4-(3,5-dichloro-2-pyridyloxy)phenoxy]propionate. nD20 1.5710. Procedure: CH3CH(OH)CH2OCH2Ph (50.0 g) and pyridine (150 ml) were put into a flask, and under cooling with ice, p-toluenesulfonic acid chloride (63.2 g) was added over a period of 30 minutes. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 days, and then water (150 ml) was added, followed by extraction twice with dichloromethane (100 ml). The extracted organic phase was washed twice with a KHCO3 saturated aqueous solution (100 ml) and twice with water (100 ml), dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and further concentrated to obtain PhCH2OCH2CH(CH3)OTs (71.2 g). was added over a period of 30 minutes followed by extraction twice with dichloromethane (100 ml) The extracted organic phase was washed twice with a KHCO3 saturated aqueous solution (100 ml) and twice with water (100 ml) dried over magnesium sulfate filtered further concentrated
