Procedure: A 100-mL single-neck round-bottomed flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer and reflux condenser was charged with 1,4-dioxane (60 mL), 2,6-dibromo-4-fluorobenzyl acetate 101C (2.34 g, 7.2 mmol), 119b (500 mg, 2.4 mmol), and cesium carbonate (1.6 g, 4.8 mmol). After bubbling nitrogen through the resulting mixture for 30 minutes, Xantphos (140 mg, 0.24 mmol) and tris(dibenzylideneacetone)dipalladium(0) (220 mg, 0.24 mmol) were added and the reaction mixture was heated at 100° C. for 12 h. After this time the reaction was cooled to room temperature and filtered. The filtrate was partitioned between ethyl acetate (40 mL) and water (40 mL). The aqueous layer was separated and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×70 mL). The combined organic layer was washed with brine (30 mL) and dried over sodium sulfate. The drying agent was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica-gel column eluting with 3:1 petroleum ether/ethyl acetate to afford 119c (632 mg, 58%) as a yellow solid.
