Procedure: Under hydrogen, a mixture of (E)-methyl 2-(6-(benzyloxy)-2,3-dihydroinden-1-ylidene)acetate (1.3) (1.64 g, 5.57 mmol), palladium on carbon (10%) (0.462 g, 3.90 mmol) in MeOH (30 mL) were stirred for 24 hours. The mixture was then filtered through silica gel to remove the Pd—C, eluting with EtOAc. After removing solvent by rotary evaporation, the residue was purified using column chromatography (1:1 EtOAc/hexane). Product 1.4 was obtained in 68% yield as a colorless oil.
