Procedure: (S)-2-Phenyl-2-tert-butoxycarbonylaminoethyl methanesulfonate (15.77 g, 0.05 mol) was dissolved in 50 mL DMF followed by the addition of sodium azide (19.5 g, 0.3 mol). The mixture was stirred for 24 hrs at 55° C., cooled to room temperature, poured into cold water (500 mL) and stirred vigorously for 20 minutes. Precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried, affording 9.97 g of the title compound as a white solid. The reaction was then cooled to room temperature, treated with diethylether and the solid filtered. The reaction was cooled to room temperature and water was added to provide a white precipitate. The precipitate was filtered and dried under vacuum to afford the desired compound (3.5 g, 85%). To a solution of azide (0.75 g, 2.86 mmol) in THF (14 mL) was added HCl (as a 4M solution in dioxane, 7 mL, 28 mmol). The reaction was stirred at RT for 16 hours, then solvents were removed under reduced pressure to give the amine hydrochloride, which was used in the next step without further purification.
