Procedure: To a solution of 1-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-3,3-dimethylpiperazine (125 mg) in methylene chloride (3.0 ml) were added triethylamine (90 ml) and 6-chloronaphthalene-2-sulfonyl chloride (167 mg). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 84 hours. The reaction mixture was diluted with methylene chloride and added with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride to form two layers. The organic layer obtained by separation was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crudely purified product was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column (hexane:ethyl acetate=8:1), whereby the title compound (155 mg) was obtained as a colorless solid. to form two layers The organic layer obtained by separation was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate concentrated under reduced pressure The crudely purified product was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column (hexane:ethyl acetate=8:1), whereby the title compound (155 mg) was obtained as a colorless solid

Procedure: In dichloromethane (18 ml), 1-tert-butoxycarbonyl-3-ethoxycarbonylpiperazine (517 mg) and 6-chloro-2-naphthylsulfonyl chloride (588 mg) were dissolved under ice cooling. To the resulting solution, diisopropylethylamine (0.59 ml) was added, followed by stirring at room temperature for 63 hours. The residue obtained by distilling off the solvent under reduced pressure was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column (hexane:ethyl acetate=3:1), whereby the title compound (688 mg, 71%) was obtained. Procedure: 6-Chloronaphth-2-ylsulphonyl chloride (2.61 g) was added in one portion to a stirred mixture of sodium sulphite heptahydrate (4.71 g), sodium bicarbonate (1.64 g) and water (25 ml) which had been heated to 70° C. The resultant mixture was heated to that temperature for 3 hours and then allowed to cool slowly to ambient temperature. The crystalline precipitate was isolated giving sodium 6-chloronaphth-2-ylsulphinate (2.4 g) which was used without further purification. to cool slowly to ambient temperature The crystalline precipitate was isolated

Procedure: To a mixture of aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate (10 ml) solution, 1-tert-butoxycarbonylpiperazine (1.0 g) and ethyl acetate (10 ml), was added 6-chloronaphthalene-2-sulfonylchloride (1.4 g) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour and extracted with dichloromethane. The extract was washed with water, dried and concentrated. The residue was crystallized from diisopropylether to give colorless crystals of 1-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-4-(6-chloro-naphthalene-2-sulfonyl)piperazine (2.02 g). extracted with dichloromethane The extract was washed with water dried concentrated The residue was crystallized from diisopropylether
